Inspired by the Jatobá fruit, whose name comes from the Guarani language and is considered a sacred Brazilian heritage due to its mystical use by indigenous people in meditative ceremonies, we created pieces manually carved from solid garapeira wood. The black tone on the pieces is the result of carbonization, the yellow tone is the natural color of the wood, and we use bee wax for the finishing.

About the artist:

Renan Santos and Juliana founded Oca Design Studio in 2015, blending design and art to craft contemporary artefacts from reclaimed natural materials. By partnering with local agencies, they repurpose felled trees into unique, handmade pieces, taking up to a week for some items. Finding creativity in the place where nature and culture meet, they create pieces like the Jatoba Vase, echoing indigenous traditions. Their work encapsulates Brazil's history, people, and landscapes. The wooden vases bear scars, are symbols of survival and revival, embodying the essence of their art practice.Inspired by the Jatobá fruit, whose name comes from the Guarani language and is considered a sacred Brazilian heritage due to its mystical use by indigenous people in meditative ceremonies, we created pieces manually carved from solid garapeira wood.
